It starts with thoughtful structure & plant-led design.
We revisited these gardens this week and they’re a reminder of why winter structure matters — strong framework, considered spacing, and the right plants in the right place.
Gardens that grow well, age gracefully, and bring joy throughout the year!

From first message in January β finished garden in 9 months πΏ
What started as a tired, under-used space is now a garden designed to be lived in — thoughtfully planned from concept to completion.
This is why garden design starts months before summer.
If your garden isn’t working for you anymore, now is the time to change that β¨
Thinking about a garden revamp later this year or next?

Now is a great time to trim back the leaves of your Helebores so their flowers can add some much needed colour to your borders. A great job for these sunny and mild winter days!

Wisteria root excavation, a great way to burn off any excess calories consumed over Christmas!
Be careful if you are thinking of planting it near your house as the roots of this one went quite deep!

What a lovely day to be back out in the fresh air!

Who said winter was dull? πΏβοΈ
Strong structure, sculptural plants and surprising pops of colour prove the garden doesn’t hibernate.
This is why we design for all seasons!

January jobs (for when the weather improves!)
Now is an ideal time for pruning climbing roses as they are dormant. Make sure you tie in long canes horizontally to encourage more flowering shoots.
This roses had unfortunately got a little out of control so we had to undertake a hard prune which may impact the flowering this summer but ultimately the plant will benefit from the reshape and training.

β¨ Winter rose magic in action! β¨ Today we tackled some gorgeous shrub roses at a client’s garden using our trusty Niwaki secateurs – precise, comfy, and perfect for shaping without bruising. πΉ
These roses had got a little too tall and wispy, so we did some reshaping to strengthen the structure and prevent branches breaking in harsher winter weather. βοΈβοΈ Winter pruning isn’t just tidy work – it’s all about cutting out the dead, dying, and diseased branches, giving your roses space to breathe, and encouraging strong growth.
After pruning, we mulched under the roses with Field Compost manure-based Maxi Mulch to feed the soil and protect roots over winter – setting the stage for a summer full of blooms! π±π
Who else loves that satisfying snip of a well-pruned rose? πβοΈ

Loving the colour and structure in this garden today!! Keeping us cheery on a cold November day. #ladiesthatmulch #wintergarden #gardeninspiration

Another enjoyable return to a garden we designed and planted back in April 2024. This garden in the heart of Cambridge is such a lovely place to work and we were even treated to some November sunshine whilst getting it ready for winter π
